Having last been held back in 2004, the Renshaw Cup is making its long-awaited return this year to help cast a spotlight on emerging talent in the baking industry.
Organised by cake decoration brand Renshaw, the latest edition of previously annual competition is to be held from 8 to 10 July at the Liverpool site of British Bakels, the business which acquired Renshaw in late 2023.
A total of 19 finalists currently enrolled in baking courses across the UK (see full list below) were selected from nominations based on their exceptional technical skill, creativity, and attitude. The students will come together during the three-day event to receive tutorials on commercial bakery operations from industry experts as well as an exclusive factory tour. They will also compete in a series of challenges designed to test creativity, technical ability, and professionalism for the chance to be named overall champion and lift the coveted trophy.
The Renshaw Cup was first launched in 1952 by company founder John Renshaw. It claims a legacy of launching baking careers, with past winners including Steve Fulford, now lead technical manager at British Bakels; Suzanne Thorpe, founder of custom wedding cake specialist The Frostery; and Toby Milner, managing director of Milners Bakery.
Both Fulford and Thorpe will be in attendance at the Crown Street site in Liverpool, as will Renshaw, who is to present the cup to the champion upon conclusion of the competition.
Commenting on the return of the Renshaw Cup, British Bakels MD James Cawthorne said: “Renshaw has been part of British baking for over a century, and we’re thrilled to bring back this iconic event to support young talent.
“As a brand trusted by both professionals and home bakers, we see this as a brilliant opportunity to inspire innovation and ensure the sustainability of baking as a skilled trade. We’re proud to play a part in developing the talent that will drive the whole industry forward – from small craft bakeries and professional cake decorators to specialist and grocery retailers,” added Cawthorne.
