Ever wondered what the perfect wine would be to accompany your Greggs’ sausage roll?
The answer: it’s a nice bottle of Portuguese red, of course.
A special event arranged by the company, which selected eight favourites from the north east bakery chain’s range, was organised to prove wine tasting does not have to be a complex or intimidating event.
Guests at the event also sampled the delights of a festive flatbread, which was paired with a nice glass of Frey Sohler Gewürztraminer fromAlsace, France, which has “lychee flavours” that are “perfect for festive fare”. Diners also enjoyed a steak and cheese roll that was matched with a “plush, rich and smooth full-bodied” red from Italy.
The event was held at the Vesuvio wine bar in Darlington, Co Durham and, according to Malcolm Copland, commercial director at Greggs, was a great success. He said: “Our food is enjoyed by millions of people across the country and we recognise that customer tastes and eating habits are evolving, so our menu is too – and there’s no reason why our great food cannot be enjoyed with a fine glass of wine, occasionally!”
