Morrisons has unveiled what it claims is the largest supermarket sausage roll.
On sale from today (7 August) nationwide, it is priced at £1 each for the first week before increasing to £1.43 on Monday 14 August.
The 445g, foot-long sausage roll is freshly baked in-store by Morrisons’ Market Street bakers and is made with seasoned pork meat and wrapped in a crisp, golden flaky pastry.
The sausage roll has to be served on a special tray that holds its weight, rather than the traditional paper bag.
The product was created following customer demand for a bigger version of the British classic.
Philippa Shaw, pie and pastry expert at Morrisons, said the sausage roll was the perfect addition for football fans in time for the new season.
“We sell one million freshly baked sausage rolls a week, but customers have asked for one that is even bigger, so we created this foot-long version,” said Shaw. “With the start of the football season approaching, we’re hoping our foot-long sausage roll will be making its way to the top of the snack league table.”
Last year, Upper Crust operator SSP announced it had secured an agreement with Paul Hollywood in to open a new bakery concept that will serve “specially developed” sausage rolls by the inch.
For National Sausage Roll Day (5 June 2017), Stacey’s Bakery created a 30ft masterpiece, which was displayed at the front of its Ilkeston bakery.
