Frozen food distributor Central Foods is gearing up for Veganuary 2020 with the launch of an unbaked vegan sausage roll for foodservice operations.
The six-inch sausage roll features a ready-glazed flaky puff pastry with a herby textured soya filling. The recipe, according to Central Foods, was specially developed to be below the government’s 2017 salt reduction targets and is suitable for those following vegan and vegetarian diets.
Central Foods describes it as perfect for food-to-go offers, takeaways, cafés, student catering outlets, sports and leisure venues, among others.
Foodservice operators are advised to bake the sausage roll for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and, to maintain the product’s vegan integrity, ensure all equipment and surfaces used for preparation, cooking and serving are clean or dedicated for vegan use only.
“The demand for vegan products has grown exponentially and shows no sign of slowing. In response, we have risen to the challenge and created an ever-growing range of superb, tasty products specifically for foodservice,” said Central Foods managing director Gordon Lauder.
“The KaterVeg! unbaked vegan sausage roll is great-tasting, versatile and simple to serve, whether as a food-to-go item or as part of a sit-down meal, allowing all types of operators to offer this British food favourite to as many customers as possible.”
Vegan sausages rolls have boomed throughout 2019 since Greggs unveiled its offering in January. Since then, a number of brands and independent bakeries have followed suit, including Wall’s, which worked with meat replacer Hooba on its Vegan Jumbo Roll.
