Foodservice provider Country Choice is set to roll out a Chicken Fajita pasty after the flavour was crowned champion at its 2018 Create a Pasty competition.

The Mexican-inspired pasty was created by Tamzin Grebot, representing retailer Gilletts Spar Silverton, Exeter, who was inspired by a dish she regularly makes for her father.

She fought off stiff competition at the event, held at the Plymouth Gin Distillery, from two finalists – a more traditional Pork, Apple and Cider variant alongside a spicy Chilli Beef pasty.

Country Choice said the winning pasty was in now production and would be on sale in the summer.

The competition was held in support of terminal illness charity Marie Curie, and 5p will be donated to Marie Curie for every pasty sold at Appleby Westward stores – a Spar group in the south west of the UK – during the first three months.

Consumer demand for more experimental and, in particular, spicy flavours in pasties is growing. Warrens Bakery, for example, recently launched a world flavours pasty range taking inspiration from the cuisines of Italy, Mexico, America and Morocco.
