Pies, pizza, and pocketable pastries are featured in our latest round-up of savoury bakery innovations.

There’s some championing of local produce going on, such as a pie filled with fish caught off Grimsby, pastries stuffed with British chicken and pork, plus a suet crust pie made with British beef steak and ox kidney.

Tastes for foreign cuisines are also catered for with the likes of chicken tikka wrapped in a naan; a pizza topped with crispy chicken, chilli, teriyaki sauce, and Kewpie mayo; and a chicken pie combined with spicy Buffalo sauce.

Savour It toastie and naan, Country Choice

In-store bakery and foodservice supplier Country Choice has expanded its ‘Savour It’ bake-in-pack range with two new lines – a Chicken & Bacon Toastie and a Chicken Tikka Naan.

The toastie (rsp: £4.60), sold in cases of 20, features chicken breast, smoked bacon pieces, and seasoned cheese sauce topped with white sauce, Cheddar, and mozzarella cheese. The naan (rsp: £4.35) combines marinated chicken breast pieces in a lightly spiced tikka masala sauce with onion bhaji, low fat yoghurt, and coriander, all wrapped up in a naan containing kalonji seeds.

The naan represents a completely new carrier in the range, which comprises 13 existing paninis, toasties, wraps, and ciabattas. Aimed at enabling retailers to offer a selection of hot food-to-go products with maximum convenience, each product comes individually packaged in ovenable film and can be cooked from frozen in around 25 minutes.

Parcels and fish pie, Fieldfare

Loose frozen food specialist Fieldfare has unveiled a range of new products designed to make mealtimes convenient and delicious this festive season.

This includes two options of premium pastry parcels (rsp: £6.49, 280g) – Cottage Pie and Chicken, Ham & Leek – which are produced by a Nottinghamshire-based butcher and baker that also supplies fine food retailers such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, and Selfridges. The Cottage Pie Parcel has an open-topped format and is filled with a regionally sourced beef filling, topped with chunky potato slices and grated red cheddar. The other pastry parcel is packed with chunks of chicken and ham, tender leek, and a rich creamy sauce.

Also available in Fieldfare freezers at farm shops, garden centres, and independent stores is the new Grimsby Fish Pie (rsp: £6.99, 370g) which has been developed by a local small producer in the northeast Lincolnshire port town and showcases the catch from its fish markets. It is filled with haddock, salmon, smoked haddock and prawns in a creamy bechamel sauce, wrapped in shortcrust pastry and finished with buttery crushed potato.

Spicy chicken pizza, Fireaway

Pizza franchise Fireaway and video game franchise Call of Duty have teamed up ahead of the 14 November release of the new Black Ops 7 game to launch the new limited-edition Tokyo Hijacked Pizza.

The spicy new pizza combines a tomato base, mozzarella cheese, crispy chicken tenders, chilli flakes, raw fresh chillies, crispy onions, and a duo drizzle of teriyaki sauce and Kewpie mayo. “The Black Ops franchise is known for psychological trickery and we’re embracing that – this time when it comes to flavour,” commented Fireaway head of marketing George Whiting. “Taste doesn’t just happen on the tongue; your brain decides what you love before you even take a bite. We wanted to bring that idea to life in a way only Fireaway can.”

Fireaway has opened over 100 new stores over the past three years, taking its UK-wide estate to 160 locations.

Festive pocket and sausage roll, Ginsters

Following the launch of its new Pockets range of on-the-go snacks earlier this year, Ginsters has now adapted its seasonally returning Festive Chicken & Stuffing Slice into a new limited-edition format. As with the slice, the Festive Chicken & Stuffing Pocket (rsp: £1.30, 100g) is filled with 100% British chicken and smoked bacon in a creamy sauce with potato and sage & onion stuffing.

The Samworth Brothers-owned savoury pastry specialist has also unveiled a new Festive Pork & Cranberry Roll (rsp: £1.50, 130g), which combines 100% British Pork with flavours of smoked bacon and cranberries, plus a special blend of spices.

Ginsters noted that its Festive Chicken & Stuffing Slice (rsp: £2.25, 170g) – first introduced in 2021 – was the No. 1 selling branded festive slice last year [Circana data, November-December 2024]. “Our new Pockets deliver tasty on the go snacking and our sausage rolls are loved by people up and down the country and we can’t wait to bring the taste of Christmas to even more shoppers this year,” added Ginsters marketing director Sarah Babb.

Neapolitan-style pizza range, Dr Oetker

The new Suprema range from the frozen pizza brand intends to bring artisanal quality to the home dining space, straight from the freezer.

Dr Oetker claims that what really makes the range sing is its use of a unique sourdough recipe crafted over thousands of hours by its very own dough-masters, following a trip to some of Naples best pizzerias. Each pizza has been baked over a 400°C hot stone to deliver an irregular, airy and crisp crust that is perfectly charred.

The range comprises three varieties – La Margherita (Pecorino cheese and mozzarella), La Romana (Spianata salami and mozzarella), and La Calabria (‘Nduja-style sausage, salami, sweet roasted red peppers, and mozzarella) – all made with Emilia Romagna tomato passata.

They are available now at Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Farmfoods stores at the introductory price of £3 each for a limited time (usual rsp: £5).

Lamb and steak & kidney pies, M&S

As the nights get darker and weather colder, the retailer has refreshed its Gastropub range to bring in nine comforting pub grub dishes from chef Tom Kerridge, among them two new pies.

The Lamb Hotpot Pie By Tom (500g, serves two) has tender chunks of lamb shoulder slow-cooked for two hours in an Old Peculier ale and mint gravy then encased in all-butter pastry and hand-finished with a sliced potato lid, also crimped by hand. “Name a more comforting dish than a rich, meaty pie served in both golden, buttery pastry and crisp British potato,” asserts Kerridge.

The Steak & Kidney Suet Crust Pie By Tom (500g, serves two) features chunks of British beef steak and ox kidney, slow cooked for three hours in a rich beef gravy with dashes of M&S Cabernet Sauvignon and French brandy, encased in a crisp and chewy suet pastry case – recommended to be served upside with Gastropub-style veg. “We’ve given the classic steak & kidney pie a shake-up with this suet recipe twist, combining the features of a traditional pudding and a pastry pie in on dish,” comments Kerridge.

Buffalo sauce chicken pie, Pukka x Sauce Shop

Pukka has buddied up with condiment disruptor Sauce Shop to launch a limited-edition Buffalo Chicken Pie, described as a bold NPD designed to inject fresh excitement into pie fixtures and drive incremental value for retailers.

The new pie (rsp: £2.25, 205g) contains chicken marinated and cooked in Sauce Shop’s bestselling Buffalo Sauce, accompanied by spicy Jalapeño mash and added tangy mature cheddar cheese, all encased in Pukka’s signature 144 layers of crisp puff pastry. Already available at Asda, it has been rolled out today (10 November) into Tesco.

Pukka said that limited editions have played a key role in its category success, with previous launches delivering £1.4m of added value [Circana data, 52w/e 3 August 2025], 70% incremental sales, and a 10% uplift in younger consumers [Kantar data to 13 August 2025]. This latest collaboration builds on that momentum, it added, using flavour, relevance and cross-brand appeal to drive further penetration.
