This Sunday (19 March) is Mother’s Day, and British Baker has taken a look at some of the treats being rolled out for the special occasion.

From stunning gateau to heart-shaped crumpets, Britain’s bakers have goodies for all tastes and budgets.

Fatherson Bakery has a trio of products available this year: a sharing cake, fairy cakes and large cupcakes.

The sharing cake (pictured) is a hand-decorated Victoria sponge cake topped with icing, sprinkles and an edible rose.

Supplied in a pack of six, Fatherson’s traditional fairy cakes are topped with pink and lavender coloured icing and are finished with a Mother’s Day message topper.

The large cupcakes are presented in a carry case containing two handmade and hand-decorated sponge cupcakes topped with pink and lavender icing.

The Mother’s Day range will be stocked across the UK by retailers including Spar, Co-op, Budgens, Londis, Nisa and garden centres, farm shops, forecourts and grocery retailers.

Patisserie Valerie has unveiled a limited-edition cake and a handmade afternoon tea designed to help consumers show how much they care.

The Mother’s Day Gateau (see image at top of feature) is described as the perfect table centrepiece for any family gathering. Priced £37.45 and designed to serve 14 people, it comprises layers of soft sponge and Patisserie Valerie’s fresh berry cream and fruits of the forest deli-fruit. The ombre-style gateau is coated with ripples of pink and white Swiss meringue buttercream and topped with icing swirl flowers and a hand-piped ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ plaque.

The Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea box (pictured above) is priced £36.95 and serves two people. It contains freshly baked scones and patisserie including profiteroles, red velvet, mini berry, and mango and passionfruit mini cake slices.

Morrisons has rolled out a host of treats ahead of the big day, including a sponge, biscuits and crumpets.

Among them is the Butterfly Sponge (£3.49) described as a classic British sponge, hand-finished with British cream, fresh British Strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar.

The range includes two heart-shaped products: crumpets (£1.25/four-pack) and chocolate-dipped shortbread biscuits (99p each).

And children can also say it with cookies, with Morrisons selling a giant Mothers’ Day cookie that is baked and hand-iced in store (£7).

Doughnut specialist Crosstown has launched its Mother’s Day gift range that includes limited edition-doughnuts and gift boxes with treats including doughnuts, candles and chocolate.

The new doughnut flavours are:

  • Homemade Raspberry Jam. Made with Crosstown’s vegan sourdough, while still warm they are rolled in caster sugar and dipped in sweet, freeze-dried raspberries to seal in the fresh raspberry jam handmade in the bakery.
  • Dark Chocolate Truffle. A vegan sourdough with a dark chocolate ganache and dark chocolate truffle filling.

Among the gift options are a pack of six doughnuts (£26.95) and 12 doughnuts (£44.95), and a For Mum gift box (from £39.95) containing six doughnuts, an Ohros Sunday Morning candle and a choice of a specialty drink including Nyetimber Classic Cuvée and Gusbourne English Sparkling Rosé.

Just Desserts Yorkshire has launched two products that are aimed at consumers looking to celebrate Mother’s Day with a nod to the tradition of afternoon tea.

The Classic Sultana Scone is a traditional, sweet and buttery sultana scone described as being the perfect pairing for a dollop of cream and jam.

Mother’s Day Vanilla Cupcakes are a vanilla-flavoured sponge topped with vanilla buttercream, Maltesers and sugared hearts.

Both products are available in cases of 16.
