Product developers at Britain’s pie and pastries makers have been busy, with suppliers revealing a raft of new products.
Here we take a look at NPD including Mediterranean-inspired pies from Pieminister, a limited-edition Ginsters slice and new Proper Cornish pasties.
Pieminister filo pies
Pieminister is launching a range of filo pastry pies in May that have been developed to tempt non-pie eaters into a Pieminister restaurant or the supermarket pie aisle.
With a recommended retail price of £4.85 for an individual 230g pie, the range comprises:
- Light as a Feta: a vegetarian spinach, feta cheese, kale, lemon & garlic filo pie
- Souk Chook: a free-range British chicken, harissa, red pepper & chickpea filo pie
- Maroc Star: a plant-based Moroccan-spiced carrot, spinach & chickpea filo pie
Pieminister has picked ingredients for their health benefits, and the range is inspired by Mediterranean cuisine from countries such as Morocco, Tunisia and Greece.
The pies contain less than 400 calories and have a variety of positive health claims, from high in protein and two of your five-a-day, to a source of fibre and low in saturated fat, according to the company.
“With summer on its way, it’s the perfect time to launch a range of pies that taste just as good eaten cold as hot,” said Pieminister founder Jon Simon.
The range launches on 17 May in Waitrose with an introductory offer of any two Pieminister pies for £7.50 until 6 June.
Proper Cornish pasties
Bodmin-based pasty maker Proper Cornish is launching two new pasties inspired by demand for Mexican and Asian flavours.
The Vegetable Dhal Curry Pasty is suitable for the vegetarian and vegan markets. It contains sweet potato, lentils, chickpeas, tomato and onion in a glossy sauce, encased in a glazed hand-crimped pastry case.
The Lamb & Mint pasty contains minced UK lamb mixed with Cornish potatoes, onion and swede, combined with a mint sauce and encased in a hand-crimped pasty.
“With quality at our core, we have been hand-crafting exceptional authentic Cornish pasties and savoury pastries for 35 years,” said Proper Cornish managing director Paul Saunders.
“With our own in-house talented team of development chefs we love creating new products and are delighted to be extending our hand-crimped pasty range with the addition of these two new flavours.”
Ginsters Creamy Tomato, Chicken & Mozzarella Slice
Ginsters has launched a limited-edition Creamy Tomato, Chicken & Mozzarella Slice (rsp: £1.95/170g) containing 100% British chicken cooked in a creamy sauce with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil pesto. It is encased in puff pastry with a tomato and basil crumb topping.
Ginsters said it is committed to bringing ongoing seasonal change and excitement to the category through limited editions, which it said had already delivered more than 600,000 new shoppers and 47% incremental sales growth.
“The latest launch in our Limited Edition Slice range is designed to introduce new shoppers to Ginsters slices as they browse for lunch options,” said Ginsters managing director Sam Mitchell. “We are proud that our innovation strategy has continued to grow our category and we hope that the mouth-watering new slice will bring even more shoppers in.”
Quorn Vegetarian Chicken & Leek Family Pie
Quorn has launched its first frozen meat-free family pie, which will serve four people for £1 per portion.
Rolling out now, the Quorn Vegetarian Chicken & Leek Family Pie (rsp: £4) contains Quorn pieces in a creamy leek sauce and wrapped in shortcrust pastry with a puff pastry top.
“We’re excited to announce the launch of a meat-free market first: Quorn’s Vegetarian Chicken & Leek Family Pie,” said Quorn marketing director Gill Riley. “A delicious addition to the growing family mealtime occasion, for a great value price.”
