Tesco Northern Ireland serves up a fresh batch of 22 local bakery lines

Fibre-rich loaves, protein pancakes, and lemon ‘Joeys’ are among the 22 bakery products from local suppliers receiving new listings at Tesco Northern Ireland.

The retailer said the move reflects the strength of its local bakery partnerships, and follows a batch of 31 listings given to homegrown bakery products last September. These contribute to a total of 118 items added to the Tesco NI bakery line-up over the past three years, with 58% of its bakery range is now locally sourced. For bread lines, 86% are supplied by bakeries in the region.

The 22 bakery lines hitting shelves this summer span everyday staples such as breads, rolls, and pancakes to indulgent sweet treats like cakes and traybakes.

Portadown-based Irwin’s Bakery is celebrating 30 years of partnership with Tesco NI, having supplied the retailer since its very first store opened in 1996. The fourth-generation family bakery is launching its new Fibre+ White and Wholemeal loaves, developed to help shoppers increase their fibre intake while still enjoying the softness and taste of everyday bread. Irwin’s is also bringing a zesty twist to a local favourite with its new Howell’s Lemon Joeys, available across 35 large Tesco NI stores.

Ashers Baking Company was founded in Ballyclare in 1993 and is now based in Newtownabbey. Its Tesco NI range includes Canadian Sourdough Bread – made using 100% Canadian wheat – along with Cinnamon Swirls, Chocolate Sponge Slices, and Chocolate Fudge Cake.

Family-run firm Bertie’s Bakery in Magherafelt, which was able to expand its workforce in 2023 thanks to a Tesco NI supply deal, is introducing new lines including Lemon Layer Cake, Crème Layer Cake, Square Crèmes, Chocolate Chip & Orange Pancakes and Lunch Box Sliders.

Holmes Bakery in Craigavon is adding further choice at Tesco with new Triple Choc Brownie, Milk Choc Rocky Road, Bakewell Flapjack and Blueberry Frangipane.

Lastly, there’s a brand-new supplier in Rosie’s Bakes. The company established by husband-and-wife team William and Rosemary Cunningham in 1992 is launching its NutriLean Energy Pancakes range in Tesco NI stores, available in Salted Caramel, Raspberry & White Chocolate, and Blueberry & White Choc Chip flavours.

Tesco NI bakery buying manager Ben McFadden said customers are always keen to find much-loved locally sourced products in store. “Our new summer bakery range will give customers even more great tasting, quality products from NI bakers,” he commented.

“Local is at the heart of what we do at Tesco Northern Ireland. Alongside growing our range with our long-standing partners, we’re also creating opportunities for more local producers to introduce their fantastic products to our customers across the region,” added McFadden.
