Urban Eat has added two summer seasonal specials to its portfolio, including its first-ever sandwich featuring avocado.

The first new product is a vegan Chipotle Chickpea & Avocado Sandwich, featuring a chickpea salsa with crushed avocado lemon juice, vegan mayonnaise and salad leaves on malted bread.

Adelie Foods, which owns Urban Eat, said it had followed a rigorous process to develop a manufacturing method that enabled the avocado to stay fresh and prevent browning when in the sandwich.

Also joining the range is a Wiltshire Ham & Applewood Smoky Cheddar sandwich with mustard slaw, smoked onion chutney and salad leaves on soft grain bread.

Both will be available in Urban Eat’s beach hut packaging from 29 April to 18 August with an rsp of £2.79.

“Our seasonal specials continue to prove a huge hit. For our summer collection, the bright seaside beach hut packaging also brings colour and a point of difference to chillers, helping retailers and operators to make the most of sales opportunities,” said Wayne Greensmith, head of category marketing at Adelie Foods.

“With the number of consumers looking for meat-free lunchtime options at an all-time high, we’ve opted to make our first avocado sandwich vegan, using a vegan mayonnaise. We introduced a vegetarian seasonal special earlier this year which has performed even better than expected, while our first-ever vegan Christmas option also proved a hit.”

Adelie Foods expanded its vegan line-up with five new products in July 2018, including the Dirty Jack Wrap, featuring BBQ jack fruit, and a Pickle Me Up Sandwich with dairy-free Cheddar-style cheese and pickle. Seasonal specials for 2019 included the vegetarian Goat’s Cheese & Slow Roasted Tomato sandwich and a Chicken Katsu sandwich.
