Around 300 staff are facing redundancy at Fox’s Biscuits as the business looks to restructure its site in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.
Fox’s said the site was currently operating at a loss and required urgent attention that would include re-configuring the biscuit production lines. The business plans to invest to “maximise new growth and commercial opportunities”.
“As part of this plan, we have informed colleagues there are number of tough decisions to make as we review manufacturing capabilities to give us the best possible chance of sustained success,” said the company.
As a result, Fox’s has started consultations with around 250 staff that will be at risk of redundancy among the 780-strong workforce.
In addition, about 50 jobs at Fox’s Uttoxeter and Wakefield distribution centres are under threat as the business looks at outsourcing warehousing.
Union Unite described the news as a massive blow to the workforce, their families and the regional economy.
“It will cause real economic pain,” said Unite regional officer Rick Coyle, adding that the union was pushing for an urgent meeting with Fox’s owner 2 Sisters Food Group.
Coyle said the union would have its first meeting with the shop stewards and management on Friday (22 March).
“Unite will be giving maximum support to our hundreds of members at Uttoxeter in the days and weeks ahead at what is a difficult time for the workforce.”
