The Real Bread Campaign has partnered with Grow Your Own Playground in an initiative that teaches London school children to grow wheat and make bread.
The initiative, called Lessons in Loaf, includes a full Build, Sow, Grow, Harvest and Bake programme. This will begin with the building of planters and then planting of seeds with a class, which are then maintained until harvest by Grow Your Own Playground.
The team then teaches children to thresh, winnow and mill the wheat to create their own flour, and turn it into a loaf to take home.
Real Bread Campaign said that the scheme touched on many curriculum subjects, and taught valuable life skills of food growing and bread making.
The project is available to primary schools across London and, through the support of the Worshipful Company of Bakers, five schools in Newham and Tower Hamlets will be given 50% off the price of the package.
Applications for schools to take part in the programme are open until 3 May.
