United Biscuits (UB) has claimed 2011 was its most environmentally friendly year. According to the company, it sent no waste to landfill from its manufacturing sites during 2011, reduced water usage by up to 12%, and reduced carbon emissions by 6%, meeting its self-imposed sustainability targets.
UB said it had also reduced water usage by 43% since 2007, reduced the carbon impact of its packaging by 15% since 2003, taken 18 million lorry miles off the road since 2005 and is using 100% sustainable palm oil.
UB brand McVitie’s has recently launched a recycling scheme, McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade, where consumers can post off their used biscuit wrappers to be recycled by TerraCycle.
Jeff van der Eems, chair of UB’s Sustainability Committee, said: “UB’s strong work to minimise our impact on the environment is consistent with our core values and sits perfectly alongside our efforts to drive sustainability in everything we do, including our positive actions on health and nutrition, and people and the community.”
