Leicestershire-based The Vegan Cakery has won a prestigious award at the Vegfest UK Festival.

It scooped Best Vegan Bakery at the event held on 10 October at London Olympia.

The artisan bakery, founded in 2012 by Michelle Orme, previously won Best Vegan Company at the 2013 UK Vegan Awards.

Orme produces more than 200 vegan cakes, pastries and other treats, including her trademarked Lemon V’urd and mostly trades online. She also supplies a range of outlets including Café Mbriki, a Greek-Cypriot café in Leicester.

She makes all her products by hand and does not take a wage from the business, donating as much as possible to animal causes.

Orme said: “When I started the business, there were two aims – to show vegan cake can be every bit as good as, and actually better than, ‘regular’ products with eggs, dairy and other animal-derived ingredients, and to also raise as much as possible for animal charities and sanctuaries. It’s really heart-warming to know so many people share my ethics as well as enjoying my products.”
