Tameside College student Oliver Campbell was crowned Young Baker of the Year in the BBC3 programme of the same name last night (Sunday 29 January).

The 17-year-old, from Bolton, impressed the judges with his all-round knowledge, and skills in the areas of pastry, bread- and cake-making and decorating.

The final four bakers to face the judges – Gerhard Jenne, founder of London cake chain Konditor & Cook, and cook and writer Gizzi Erskine – were, alongside Campbell, former Baking Industry Awards winner Amelia Nutting, Shuga Budz; Robin Biesok, Rank Hovis; and Liverpool Community College student Katy Buckman.

Around 100 applicants auditioned for the series, facing written tests and an interview with a panel of industry experts to ensure their knowledge of bakery was worthy of the national title. Twenty were picked to complete in a hands-on skills test and judges then decided the final four.
