Who You Callin’ Cupcake? Michelle and Vinny Garcia
It has been a long time coming, but we finally have our first punk-inspired bakery book, from Chicago’s Bleeding Heart Bakery, a self-proclaimed specialist in "odd and unique flavours".
Setting out to create "cupcake anarchy", the closest the authors come to cupcake shockery is the astonishingly named Irish Car Bomb cupcake a cake made with a whiskey ganache and Irish cream frosting, misguidedly made to "celebrate" St Patrick’s Day.
This sits next to a selection of cocktail-themed recipes, from Tequila Sunrise to Bloody Mary to Mojito, mirroring the trend here for cocktail-inspired flavour profiles.
More surprising is the white chocolate wasabi cupcake two flavours that "go incredibly well together, you just have to get over the initial ’I don’t get it’." Better (or worse)still is the Tandoori cupcake, made with pineapple, raisins, yellow curry, cayenne, asafoetida, ground mustard and cardamom. A Caprese recipe features balsamic vinegar in both the cake and frosting, while another has an avocado buttercream.
What all this shows brilliantly is how basic bases and topping recipes can be tweaked to unleash your punky DIY creativity.
