Bakery chain Greggs is introducing sourdough pasties with less than 300 calories and up to two-thirds less fat and saturated fat than its standard pasty.
The two new products, with chicken katsu or Bombay potato fillings, use a crunchier sourdough-based shortcrust pastry with a crumb topping rather than traditional puff pastry with butter.
Roger Whiteside, Greggs’ chief executive officer, said: “Greggs is well-loved for its traditional pasties and sausage rolls, but we recognise that our customers are increasingly looking for lower calorie and lower fat options.”
“All the research says Greggs is a brand which appeals right across the whole spectrum of consumers. We want them to come more frequently,” he added.
The pasties contain 9g rather than 25g of fat and score green and amber – rather than red – on the Food Standards Agency’s “traffic light” system.
Earlier this year, Greggs introduced a range of boxed salads, falafel and noodles that come in at fewer than 400 calories under its Balanced Choice brand. These products now make up 10% of all sales at Greggs.
