Expansion for Valerie
Patisserie Valerie is continuing its expansion outside London with a new outlet in Salisbury, and more planned in 2011. The London-based chain has opened outlets in Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury, Twickenham, Wolverhampton, Leeds and London last year, and has plans to open in York, Manchester Arndale, Liverpool and Chester in early 2011.
Boparan must act
The Panel on Takeovers and Mergers has ruled that Boparan Holdings must either make an offer for Northern Foods or announce that it does not intend to make an offer by 21 January 2011. The board of Northern Foods continues to recommend a vote in favour of the proposed Greencore merger.
Starbucks’ siren call
To mark its 40th anniversary in March, Starbucks has revamped its logo. The new image will not feature the name of the coffee chain at all, but is instead focused on the image of the ’siren’ present in the centre of the previous logo, which will now be green instead of black.
China bakery boom
A Euromonitor report said the bakery market in China will grow by 30% in four years. Sales rose from 3.7bn yuan in 2000 to 7.8bn yuan last year, and will reach 11.1bn yuan by 2015. Per capita consumption was 4kg last year, compared with 38kg in the UK.
