Massive rates rise

Business rates for one Devon bakery have risen from £9,000 a year to £21,000. Along with other small firms in Salcombe, the Upper Crust Bakery will now have to fork out more following a review by the Valuation Office. Ben Holt-Wilson, who runs the bakery, said an appeal against the rise had been rejected. A Valuation Office spokeswoman said it reflected changes in the market.

ABST conference

Don’t forget to book your place at the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees’ annual conference, at Alton Towers from 10-12 June. The events programme includes the AGM, competitions, and a black-tie dinner. For details contact
