Up to 60 jobs could be at risk at Hayden’s Bakeries as rising commodities costs hit the company hard.

Despite an 8% increase in output by the Devizes-based firm, it is unable to pass on the 25% average increase in the cost of its raw materials to consumers, according to The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald.

Managing director Paul Smith reportedly said that the company has been forced to make savings by cutting manpower, through the loss of agency staff, and by asking for voluntary redundancies.

Hayden’s – a major bakery, patisserie and desserts supplier into Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Costa – launched Hopton Distribution, earlier this summer, based at the firm’s site in Devizes, Wiltshire. It features a picking operation that supplies Waitrose stores, with consolidated loads going into Waitrose depots.
