Bakery chain Greggs has called time on one of its late-night stores after a trial failed to pull in enough customers.

The company had been granted permission last year to open its Orchard Street branch in Preston until 4.30am at weekends, to cater for crowds spilling out of pubs and clubs in the city centre. The branch has now returned to its normal weekend hours, closing at 5pm.

A Greggs spokeswoman said it still had a small number of shops that operated late opening hours successfully and would continue to review them and adjust opening hours to each location.

She added: “The extended opening hours at the Orchard Street branch of Greggs in Preston was a trial for a temporary period only and has now ended. In this particular location we decided not to continue with late opening and the shop will return to normal operating hours.”
