Morrisons has revealed it achieved record customers numbers over Christmas this year, as it posted a pre-close trading update for the financial year to 29 January 2012.

The supermarket announced total sales (excluding fuel) were up 2.9% for the six weeks to 1 January, with like-for-like sales up 0.7% (excluding fuel). An extra 800,000 customers come through its doors per week during the period, it added.

The firm said that in a challenging Christmas period for the consumer, Morrisons delivered sales growth in line with the market.
