A London-based cupcake business has decided to expand and re-launch as a tearoom.
Mulberry Teacup, a bakery shop which launched on Kingly Court off London’s Carnaby Street around three months ago, has transformed into a tearoom to cope with increasing customer demand for a sit-down retail bakery outlet in the local area.
Jennifer Kirby, owner of Mulberry Teacup, said: “To turn the business into a tearoom was my original idea. Initially, I started Mulberry Teacup as a pop-up concept so I could test what the area was like, so I just sold cupcakes during the first few months.
“Part of the reason why we turned the business into a tearoom was through the feedback from our customers who wanted somewhere to sit down and have a cake and coffee. So we knew it was time to take the business to this next level.”
As part of the move, Kirby said she has hired a new member of staff for the tearoom, as well as offering new cupcake-making and decorating classes for one of the business’ signature offerings – cupcake bouquets.
“There are a lot of cupcakeries which are offering the same products, which is why I wanted Mulberry Teacup to have some sort of unique selling point,” Kirby added. “I started getting ideas when I was creating the rose-type piping on cupcakes and created the bouquet product, which has proven to be popular because they double up as flowers and desserts at occasions like weddings.
“The classes we now offer, which demonstrate how to create the cupcake bouquets, are in quite high demand and we are seeing more and more people sign up for them.”
Kirby, previously an accountant for more than 10 years, said she undertook a number of informal bakery courses before setting up her first bakery business in Dublin four years ago.
