A nostalgic pop-up sandwich shop has attracted global attention after bringing back the crisp twist.

Simply Crispy in Belfast has cashed in on the children’s favourite, with huge success. The four-week pop-up launched last Monday and reportedly amassed long queues before selling out of crisps within two hours.

Owner Andrew McMenamin repurposed his That Wee Café following a spoof article on satirical news website Ulster Fry, which suggested such a business venture, although tongue in cheek.

McMenamin thought it had legs and launched with 35 flavours of crisps. Customers can choose their own bread, crisps and add ham or cheese to their sandwiches, which are served with soup and chips for £3.50. Northern Ireland-based crisp manufacturer Tayto’s cheese and onion flavour was the first to sell out. The establishment also offers Walkers.

McMenamin said its appeal lies in people revisiting the dish of their childhood and credits the Cereal Killer Café in Brick Lane, London, which sells more than 100 varieties of cereal, with some of Simply Crispy’s success. It was established by Belfast twins Alan and Gary Keery.

Although intended as a four-week pop-up, McMenamin is open to prolonging the venture as long as it is viable.
