Supermarket chain Morrisons’ £1.50 pie has been crowned the Best Pie in the United Kingdom at the recent SuperMeat Awards 2016, held in London.
The Caramelised Onion Lattice pie beat off competition from across the UK, but was awarded the Best Pie title by a panel of Michelin-starred chefs, master butchers and industry experts.
The pie weighs 400g and is made with 100% cured pork meat, surrounded by a rich crispy pastry.
It took six months and 12 recipe attempts to develop the product, and over 40 pie experts were involved in its inception.
Morrisons pie expert Sean Gill said: “The pie is a real cracker. It’s really meaty and bursting with sweet and savoury flavours. I think it goes best with a pint of fine Yorkshire bitter.”
He added: “It was developed in response to growing customer demand for more exciting and gourmet pork pie flavours, which would have been unthinkable a decade ago.”
Over 1m of the pies have been sold around the country at Morrison’s Market Street deli counters.
