HRH The Princess Royal this week officially opened a £6m Wrights Food Group factory in Crewe.
The 40,000sq ft plant employs around 100 staff and makes products including 900,000 doughnuts a week, cookies, cakes, scones, mince pies and biscuits. Wrights’ customers include fast-food outlets, coffee shops and independent bakery shops.
The company said it has invested more than £30m in its food manufacturing facilities and distribution centre in Crewe over the past 15 years. The site also has factories producing confectionery, ready meals and savouries.
The Princess Royal was welcomed at the plant by Wrights chairman and CEO Peter Wright. During a tour of the manufacturing lines, Princess Anne saw cakes being hand-decorated, novelty biscuit production, spiral freezers and ultrasonic robotic cutting equipment.
Wright described this week’s visit by Princess Anne as a major highlight of the company’s 90th anniversary year celebrations.
In welcoming the Princess Royal, he said: “By a very happy coincidence, my grandfather John James Wright founded our business in the same year Her Majesty The Queen was born. It therefore feels even more special and appropriate to mark our 90th anniversary with this visit by a member of the royal family.”
Wrights employs more than 480 people across its operating centres, including food development, production, sales & marketing and distribution.
