Britain's Best Loaf 2019

Bakers now have one more week to enter Britain’s Best Loaf 2022 – so be sure to get your entries in to see how your bread matches up to the competition.

The deadline to enter loaves is now Monday 28 March, meaning there’s still time to showcase your breadmaking skills and the quality of your product in one of the key events in the baking industry calendar.

The 2022 competition – sponsored by ADM, Bako, Lesaffre, Brook Food, Delice de France and Food Paper – takes place on 25 April 2022 at the Farm Shop & Deli Show at NEC Birmingham.

Loaves can be entered into six categories:

  • Gluten free
  • Innovation
  • Plain sourdough
  • Sourdough with other ingredients
  • White
  • Wholegrain

The cost of entry is £25+VAT per product entered. (See our dedicated website for full details including the criteria for each category.)

Each loaf entered into the competition will be put through its paces by the expert judging panel comprising baking industry luminaries and breadmaking cognoscenti. The entries will be assessed according to their external appearance, internal structure, aroma and taste.

What’s more, all loaves are scored ‘blind’, so the judges will be unaware which bakery has made the bread while the process is taking place.

Winners will be chosen for each of the six categories, before being placed in a final run-off to decide which bread takes the ultimate title of Britain’s Best Loaf.

As well as the prestige of winning, success in the competition brings business benefits, including positive press, marketing opportunities and greater customer awareness.

“A lot of our customers expanded what they bought and tried something they wouldn’t normally buy after we promoted the win,” said Jenny Rogers, shop manager at Joe’s Bakery, winner of Britain’s Best Loaf 2021 with its Cardamom Sourdough.

Catriona Savage, co-owner, Beefcake Café – winner of Best Plain Sourdough 2021 with its Glasgow Sourdough – noted a similar upturn. “The win really helped pick up trade, attracting new customers who not only bought our bread but also tried our other products,” she told British Baker.
