Discounter Aldi is following in Greggs’ footsteps with the launch of a vegan steak bake.
The frozen Plant Menu No Steak Bakes have an rsp of £1.19 for a pack of two. They resemble a classic steak bake in appearance and taste, according to the retailer, and are filled with soya protein encased in a flaky vegan pastry, which uses a blend of vegetable oils.
“In an Aldi first, the supermarket is bringing the infamous bakery shop favourite – the vegan steak bake – to stores near you,” the retailer said. “The end result is so delicious, you definitely won’t miss the real thing.”
It comes just a few months after Greggs unveiled its Vegan Steak Bake, which is filled with Quorn pieces, diced onions and gravy. The NPD served as a follow-up to its immensely successful vegan sausage roll.
Aldi boosted its vegan range at the start of the year with new additions, including a Vegan Sausage Roll, a three-strong range of vegan pizzas, with BBQ Jackfruit and Spicy Cauliflower variants, as well as Spicy Firecracker Roasted Vegetable Parcels and a Korean BBQ Style Chick’n Sandwich.
