The Village Bakery (Coedpoeth) has come to the rescue of some hungry local schoolchildren, after their breakfast crumpets were stolen.
Pupils at a Wrexham primary school were set to be fed more than 100 crumpets at a breakfast club, when thieves stole them en route, along with six two-litre packs of milk.
After reading the story in the local paper, the Daily Post, sales manager Calvin Fennell sent an emergency rescue pack of 120 crumpets to the school in Saltney, Wales, from the Wrexham bakery.
The crumpets sent were The Village Bakery’s new sourdough products, which have been produced on the bakery’s new £2m production line.
Fennell told British Baker: “I saw it on the Daily Post, and I asked the boss if we could send them any and he said to just send them down!
“I was just trying to help them out, but they were over the moon.”
The crumpets are currently being sold in local independent stores, and the bakery hopes to be producing around 12 million crumpets a year after they ramp up production.
The products are claimed to be the UK’s first sourdough crumpets, and they are currently available in small independants, with more packs being rolled out soon.
