Name: Hannah Worth
Age: 25
Job title: Founder
Company and location: Bowla - A Bowl With A Roll, Swansea
Education: Physics BSc, Engineering Leadership and Management MSc.
Tell us about your career to date
I left university in 2021 after studying physics and joined my dad on the project that was Bowla.
Explain your job in a sentence (or two)
I am the face of the brand and in charge of creating and managing opportunities for future growth.
What does a typical work day involve for you?
Serving customers in our storefront, packing online orders and managing the store. I attend meetings and networking events and also grow brand exposure and manage opportunities that come our way. Each day is different, which I find really exciting.
Tell us about a challenge you have overcome recently?
We are currently pivoting the direction of the business. We are attempting to get into large scale events, catering for corporates and stadiums. This is different to what we are currently doing (which is selling direct to customers), but we have realised it’s easier for us to get revenue from event catering than selling to customers. People love new things, but cost of living means people generally want to stay within their comfort zone. Corporate pre-paid lunches seems to be the answer to that!
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned during your time in the baking industry?
How to bake bread! It’s so therapeutic to make bread from scratch but it’s hard work. People expect bread to be cheap but handmade bread takes time.
What are your career highlights so far?
Being a Rising Star finalist at the 2024 Baking Industry Awards, appearing on the Channel 4 programme Aldi’s Next Big Thing, and being named the winner of the Llais Cymru Welsh Women in Business Awards Food & Drink. Another career highlight was moving into bigger and more suitable premises for Bowla.
What advice would you give to up-and-coming talent in the baking industry?
Engage with the community as much as possible. Bakery has a really fabulous community with lots of support.
