A London bakery has been flooded with donations for the Poppy Appeal, after its original collection box was stolen.

Jesshops Bakers, in Newington Green Road, had collected an estimated £50 when its collection box was untied from the till and stolen on 30 October - the shop does not have CCTV.

Owner Ken Jesshop pledged to bake 100 poppy cupcakes to be sold at £1 each on Saturday 7 November, reports the Islington Gazette.

Mr Jesshop, 74, said: “Saturday was actually a poor trading day for us, maybe because of the bad weather, but the cakes went fantastically well. We probably more than doubled what we lost, so obviously we are delighted.”

Some people paid more than £1 - one woman paid £4 for a cake. Others came in saying they didn’t want a cake, but put money in our new collection box anyway, he said.

Jesshops is a third-generation bakers opened on Newington Green Road bakery in 1923. The original Jesshops bakery was destroyed by a German V1 flying bomb during World War II.

The total funds raised in the Poppy Appeal 2015 will start being counted later this week, following Armistice Day.
