The Kandy Bar has been named Scottish Baker of the Year – just months after it clinched the World Scotch Pie Championships.

The third-generation Ayrshire family firm has shops in Saltcoats, Kilwinning, West Kilbride and Kilbirnie.

A selection of their products were judged with hundreds of others from bakers across the country and rated for their appearance, freshness, taste and value for money.

Owner Stephen McAllister and his wife Rona picked up the award at the weekend at the Scottish Bakers’ 125th annual conference at a ceremony fronted by celebrated cake designer Mich Turner.

The wholesale baker of the year was Reids of Caithness, the retail craft baker of the year was The Kandy Bar, the craft baker of the year was Mimi’s Bakehouse of Edinburgh, and the manufacturer of the year was Carr’s Flour of Carlisle.

McAllister told The Daily Record: “It’s amazing – I feel like we’re on cloud nine. It’s a fairytale come true. I am absolutely delighted, shocked and stunned.

“To have taken the World Scotch Pie title for the second time in January and now to take the title of Scottish Baker of the Year, words cannot express how delighted I am.

“Thanks to each and every member of team Kandy Bar who made this happen.”

Alan Clarke, chief executive of Scottish Bakers, said: “Our Scottish Baker of the Year has shown time and again that they are a worthy winner by making it through each and every stage of the competition with flying colours.

“For every baker who was entered by a customer, for all of our shortlisted bakers and for all of our members who have helped and supported us in making this competition happen, I offer my warmest congratulations. We are a great industry making quality products day in and day out and we should be proud.”
