Following an article in British Baker, small bakeries are being encouraged to apply for organic certification with a new cut-price offer.
Certification body Organic Farmers & Growers (OF&G) has launched a two-year subsidised package for bakeries with an organic turnover of up to £50,000. The deal would cost new com-panies no more than £400 per year for the first two years of their certification, with fees rising to the standard £450 thereafter.
Chief executive Richard Jacobs said he was prompted to introduce the offer following a BB article (’Stifling the grass roots?’, July 16), which said that obtaining organic certification was proving prohibitively challenging and costly for many small bakers.
He said: "All it takes is a bit of organisation, which we smooth along by creating pro-forma documents and other tools to make it as simple as we can. We were distressed to hear that businesses which should be contributing to the growth of organics were being put off taking that step."
