Job retention
Warburtons is set to make no compulsory redundancies in the first phase of its £25m Bolton bakery redevelopment. Following the announcement in January that 121 jobs out of 234 on two bread lines at its Hereford Street bakery were at risk, Warburtons, alongside the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, has identified alternative positions within the firm. Forty-five employees have taken voluntary redundancy or early retirement.
Homeless support
A cupcake bakery and café, which creates training and job opportunities for homeless people, is part of a £10m scheme to improve a Birmingham-based housing and support centre. The Frost & Snow bakery will be based at the Snow Hill site of social housing group Midland Heart and is led by local baker Sarah Frost. It is due to open in 2011.
