Reeve the Baker is operating from a catering trailer after a fire wrecked its Wilton shop in Wiltshire.

A fire in the food preparation room caused smoke damage to the back of the store, but after being lent a trailer from confectioner and caterer Peter Symonds, it reopened for business behind the shop. Most of the usual products are on sale, supplied by its nearby manufacturing bakery.

MD Gary Reeve said: “The front of the shop where we trade hasn’t been too badly affected and we’re optimistic we can open that part again soon.”

The shop – one of 11 owned by the West Country company – needs completely gutting and refitting, and Reeve said it would be a few months before it could completely reopen.

“It’s all a bit of a blow, but everyone is trying to be positive. The trailer is working very well and, on the first day we had it, we did about three-quarters of our usual trade, which is pretty good.”
