The Alliance for Bakery Students & Trainees (ABST) held its annual conference at Alton Towers Hotel recently and here British Baker highlights the winners.

The event, which was sponsored by a host of industry backers, held business seminars for students from around the country and included the UK quarter finals for the 10th Délifrance Sandwich Cup.

The Saturday was given over to a host of competitions, an awards ceremony and formal dinner, where the students listened to speeches by retiring president David Goddard and also welcomed new president Ian Dobbie, managing director of Délifrance.

Bob Burns, last year’s Baker of the Year at the Baking Industry Awards (BIA) and chairman of the confectionery judges, told delegates the standard of the competition entries had been high – but added some were excluded for not following competition rules.

He said: “Keep on learning. I am still learning every day and I have been in bakery for 45 years.”
