A co-operative group in Liverpool is hoping to raise £13,000 to re-establish a family-owned bakery outside Anfield football stadium.
The local residents, known as the Homebaked Community Land Trust, are working together to re-open local independent bakery Mitchells, which closed in 2010.
The group has also enlisted the support of artist Jeanne van Heeswijik to create a community-owned business and self-help housing project.
To help raise money, the trust has turned to Kickstarter, a funding platform for creative projects. On 18 December, just over £6,700 had been raised from 183 financial backers.
The group have until Tuesday 29 January 2013 to achieve their £13,000 funding target - in the all or nothing funding scheme.
All money raised will go towards purchasing a professional four-deck oven for the bakery which had been in business for over 100 years.
Speaking on the group’s campaign video, Jessica Doyle, co-founder of Homebaked, said: "For over 100 years Mitchells was a bakery at the heart of the community. It was a landmark, and in a sense, an institution.
"Homebaked is much more than a business: it’s a vital hub for the community."
The bakery will include a shop front with tables for customers to sit and enjoy baked goods, a hatch to serve hot food on football match days, as well as a training kitchen. Community baking sessions, apprenticeships and the use of the kitchen for micro-businesses will be on offer.
It hopes to open for business in June 2013.
