Following the success of its cupcakes at Virgin Atlantic’s 30th birthday celebrations, British Baker went to visit Raise bakery in Worthing to scoop some top tips regarding working as a successful family business.

Raise is a business run by family trio: mum Lindsey, dad Trevor and son Jeremy. They set up the bakery in honour of Lindsey’s mother after she died five years ago. Up until the last few months of her life she was still trying to bake, and this inspired Lindsey and her family to go ahead and set up a bakery.

The family started off by selling cupcakes and gifts from their own kitchen. After the business grew further, the Jacobs moved out of their home kitchen and into their own bakery premises, where they have been for the past year.

The business has previously had contracts with Virgin Atlantic to provide the cupcakes for its inflight services.

The family is now looking to the future, by developing new recipes, such as rocky road with popcorn or jelly babies, and targeting the corporate market.
