  • Interesting. Assuming that M&S is not using any processing aids that they've chosen to leave off the label, this demonstrates that multiple retailers can make Real Bread but generally choose to use additives instead. Perhaps this will encourage other supermarkets to follow suit. Would love to see M&S roll out front-of-pack full ingredients listing (in big bold type) for all of their baked products.

  • To help make sure that shoppers get what they're paying for (and to protect bakers of genuine sourdough bread from unfair competition from companies that market as sourdough products manufactured by other means) the government needs to set a legal definition of sourdough bread.

We're not saying additives should be banned - though they are, by definition, unnecessary and we'd rather that manufacturers voluntarily went 'clean label' by cleaning additives out of their products. Nor are we saying there's anything wrong with using baker's yeast - brilliant Real Bread can be made using it...

....just don't use the word sourdough to name or market a product made using these things.
