High street baker Greggs is trialling a home delivery service called Greggs Delivered, which, if successful, will roll out nationwide.

Greggs Delivered will see savouries and cakes delivered to your door – currently only in Newcastle, but a nationwide plan is in the offing.

Workers at the North Tyneside-based Cobalt Business Park are the first to receive steak bakes and the like to order – the 14,000-strong workforce can order delivery of the entire range to their office.

Workers can order from a selection of platters, as well as single sandwiches and sweet treats, and the order will be delivered to their door the same day.

British Baker understands the next phase of trials will take place in Newcastle, London and Manchester city centres in the near future.

Raymond Reynolds, retail director at Greggs, told British Baker: "Convenience is key in the food-on-the-go market and we are extremely excited to offer delivery of a selection of our great tasting freshly prepared food directly to our customers by trialling a free delivery service in one of our Newcastle shops."

Earlier this month Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside suggested that bread is being phased out in bakeries as consumers turn to supermarkets for their loaves.
