Public Health England (PHE), part of the Department of Health, has issued advice on what consumers should and should not be eating.
The Eatwell Plate follows computer modelling by PHE experts on how consumers can have a diet that meets government recommendations on the intake of fat, salt and sugar.
While the dairy industry is up in arms as consumers are urged to reduce their milk intake, the bakery industry has fared better, as the advice is to “eat plenty of bread.”
The report also specifies that wholegrain and higher fibre versions, with less added fat, salt and sugar, are preferable. It also advises checking the label on bread, in order to check the salt content.
Finally, the report recommends having a sandwich for lunch, but also says: “foods that are high in fat include cakes and biscuits. These are often high in sugars too.”
