Scottish manufacturer Brownings the Bakers is relocating its flour silo as part of a £1.3m expansion plan.
Starting today (17 April 2014), the 30ft silo will be moved to the bakery’s new production plant next door to its current site at Bonnyton Industrial Estate, Kilmarnock.
The silo hosts one of the bakery’s signature products, the Killie pie, and is branded with the infamous logo, “Say Aye to a Killie Pie”.
The expansion is set to double the bakery’s capacity, with £650,000 allocated for building works, and £650,000 for the new plant and bakery equipment. Investment company Scottish Enterprise has provided a £250,000 grant towards the project.
Building work should be completed this August, with the project due to finish in two years’ time.
According to Brownings, the expansion aims to “satisfy demand” from Aldi, Dobbies Garden Centres, Spar and Waitrose in Scotland and the north of England, as well as its own 10 retail outlets.
Founded in 1945, the family business produces savoury and bakery products, and employs 180 staff.
