Home economics skills are now more valued than work experience, according to research carried by baking decoration specialist Cake Angels.

Cake Angels found accurate grammar, home economics and inspired hobbies top the list of employers’ wish lists.

The survey polled 1,008 employers and HR departments across the UK.

It explored the qualities and behaviours employers are looking for in their latest wave of recruiting, and revealed that proficiencies in home economics (including nutrition, design, cooking and textiles) came out as the second most important trait to recruiters and managers, surpassed only by accurate spelling and grammar.

It also found the most popular hobbies to help your CV stand out were baking, social media and exercise or sport.

Emma Tomkins, marketing manager at Fiddes Payne, which owns Cake Angels, said: “Interests such as baking and decorating suggest the applicant is daring, creative and patient, with an eye for detail, which explains the desire from employees for their applicants to have hobbies of this kind.”
