A Huddersfield bakery will appear on this year’s Dragon’s Den Christmas special with its creation - the Christmas Dinner cake.

The innovative Yorkshire cake company, ProperMaid, run by former school dinner lady Allison Whitmarsh, will try to persuade the BBC2 ‘dragons’ to invest in the venture.

The centrepiece to Whitmarsh’s pitch is her Christmas Dinner cake, originally commissioned by delicatessen Weeton’s of Harrogate.

The cake caught the eye of the programme’s planners, containing all the festive trimmings expected at a traditional Christmas dinner: carrots, parsnips, cranberries, Christmas spices, chestnuts and sprouts.

Whitmarsh, who launched her business four years ago, with the help of local initiative Business Mine, is delighted at the attention her brand has received.

She said: “I cannot believe how far we’ve come as a business and how popular our ‘traditional cakes with a twist’ are becoming.

“Last year, we were unveiling our Christmas Dinner Cake to Harrogate foodies; this Christmas the cake has got us on to a prime-time television show. Fingers crossed that we get a big slice of investment too.”

The bakery, based in Heritage Mills, has already managed to make a name for itself with its unusual home-baked cakes and loaves. Flavours have included courgette and lime, beetroot and chocolate, liquorice, and chocolate chilli and fudge, made with real chillies. The bakery’s dandelion and burdock variety won a Gold Star at the 2012 Great Taste Awards.

The show will be broadcast on 23 December on BBC2 at 7.30pm.
