Gateshead-based Barry’s Home Bakery has been acquired by petrol station operator Penny Petroleum.
The sale, made for an undisclosed price, sees the business change hands for the first time from the family which founded it in 1957.
Specialist business property advisor Christie & Co helped market the bakery and noted that it had attracted a wide range of potential buyers as it offered fully equipped manufacturing facilities and three retail outlets.
Barry’s main bakery and head office is located on Wellington Road in the Dunston area of Gateshead, while its two other shops are across town in Sheriff Hill and Lobley Hill. Its core range includes bread, sandwiches, cakes, pasties, and seasonal goods, and it supplies wholesale to retail shops, catering companies, farm shops, sandwich bars, coffee shops, tearooms, and garden centres across the North East.
Penny Petroleum was ultimately successful in its bid for Barry’s. Having opened its first petrol forecourt in the village of Powburn, Northumberland, in 1994, it has grown to become the fifth largest independent operator in the country with over 90 sites – now branded Penny On The Move – spread across north England, north Wales, and Scotland.
“We are delighted to have purchased Barry’s Home Bakery. It is a fantastic addition to Penny on the Move,” commented Penny Petroleum CEO Vicky Hennessy. “As a family-run business with strong roots in the North East, Barry’s Home Bakery aligns perfectly with our values. We’re excited to explore how the bakery can work in synergy with our existing operations and contribute to our continued growth.”
Former Barry’s owner Aaron Nickerson, who is the youngest son of founder Harry, said he was excited to begin retirement after finally selling the bakery. “Barry’s Home Bakery has been our family business since 1957, so taking the decision to sell was not one we made lightly. To that end we are immensely pleased to have sold to Penny Petroleum who I am sure will grow the business and achieve great success,” he added.
