Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna has proposed that Britain should host a similar scheme to the United States’ Small Business Saturday.
The Labour MP wrote to American Express, which has sponsored the one-day event in the US, during the first weekend after Thanksgiving, since 2010, asking to host the same concept in the UK.
He suggested 7 December as an ideal date to help Britain’s small, independent and local businesses benefit from the event in the run up to the Christmas period.
Last year’s Small Business Saturday, which took place on 24 November, saw consumers spend a total of $5.5bn (£3.4bn) with independent businesses.
The Department for Communities and Local Government said it was an idea that would be considered, according to the BBC News website.
