Asda has joined Morrisons in the trend for oversized baked goods with the launch of a foot-long chocolate éclair.
Available from 14 December, priced at £5.00, the foot-long chocolate éclair is made with light choux pastry, filled with Belgian chocolate mousse and sticky caramel sauce. The pastry is topped with a chocolate fondant and dusted in gold.
The news follows Morrisons’ introduction in August 2017 of what it claimed was the largest supermarket sausage roll, measuring a foot-long.
The latest éclair launch was inspired by an emerging trend for over-sized desserts spotted by the Asda bakery team during an innovation trip to Paris.
“Straight from the streets of Paris to Asda shelves, traditional French favourites can now be enjoyed by the whole family this Christmas,” said Claire Reed, product development manager for chilled bakery at Asda.
“Our experts have lovingly hand-finished our striking new desserts, adding the final touch of affordable luxury to your seasonal soirée – sure to leave your loved ones saying ‘Ooh la la’!”.
As well as the chocolate éclair launch, the retailer has released a giant ‘Marie Antoinette’-inspired macaron cake (pictured above) for consumers to enjoy in the run-up to Christmas, which is available to purchase now.
The Extra Special Raspberry & White Chocolate Macaron Cake is priced at £8.00 and is stuffed with white chocolate mousse and topped with raspberries and a sprinkling of pistachios.
