London hotel The Academy has created what it has describes as a “quintessentially English” afternoon tea with an Asian twist.

Bakery items, including ginger and cinnamon scones with Devonshire clotted cream, Chinese egg tarts and sesame Jian Dui dough balls, will be served alongside English savoury staples, as part of the Mr Ma’s Afternoon Tea service.

The theme was inspired by the historic novel Mr Ma and Son, written by Chinese author Lao She, which draws on his own experiences of living in Bloomsbury following his arrival in the 1920s and finding solace, peace and comfort in tea.

Asian teas, including Jade Sword, Oolong and Mr Ma’s Special Blend, also feature on the menu, alongside British classics.

The afternoon tea service is available from Thursday 13 June between noon and 6pm daily and costs £25 per person.

Earlier this year, vegan eatery By Chloe launched afternoon tea at its two London locations.
