Tributes have been paid to baking industry veteran David Roberts, former chairman of Roberts Bakery, who passed away on 1 January 2025.

He was described as a distinguished figure whose influence extended far beyond the walls of Roberts Bakery, leaving an indelible mark on the broader baking industry. With a career spanning several decades, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, vision, and leadership, contributing significantly to the growth and success of both the family business and the wider industry.

Roberts joined the family bakery in 1956 where he held a series of key leadership roles, including production director, managing director, and ultimately chairman – a position he held until his retirement in 2006.

Among his numerous achievements, Roberts was instrumental in establishing the Pastry Case Bakery in 1987, which later evolved into Little Treats, a major manufacturer of long-life ambient pastry products and the largest manufacturer of gingerbread biscuits.

He was also actively involved in industry associations, joining the British Society of Baking (BSB) in 1971. He served as chairman of the BSB from 1981 to 1982 and was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the British Baker’s Special Award in 2004 and a Lifetime Honorary Award from the BSB in 2018 for his invaluable contributions to the bakery sector.

He held a pivotal role within the Federation of Bakers as well, where he served as chairman from 1991 to 1994. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to advocate for the industry, fostering innovation and collaboration among members.

“His remarkable leadership, innovation, and service to the bakery industry will endure as his legacy – a testament to his passion and dedication. He will be missed by all who knew him,” said Roberts Bakery managing director Julia Banton, who stepped into the role earlier this year.
