London-based Breadcraft Bakery has closed after health inspectors found cockroaches and pigeons in its storeroom.

Complaints from neighbours led to Waltham Forest Council environmental health officers searching the premises and discovering an infestation among the bakery’s supplies and produce.

Health officers took images of the premises in Heybridge Way in Leyton and secured a closure order from Thames Magistrates’ Court last month.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for the environment, said keeping its residents safe is always its first priority.

“The environmental health team works extremely hard to make sure businesses serving the Waltham Forest community are clean and hygienic,” said Loakes. “I know residents will join me in offering them thanks as we move towards the festive break.”

Breadcraft Bakery is the latest in a series of closures in the area for breaches of health and safety, including Déjà vu bakery in Walthamstow following a mouse infestation.
